Speaker 1:

Welcome to another episode of the American Beer Review Podcast.

Speaker 2:

Good times for good friends requires good beer. Lucky for us, we know ethnic all three.

Speaker 3:

We're a group of friends who grew up in the Pacific Northwest, giving us a jump start on our craft beer journey.

Speaker 1:

Join us today. While, brian, I pride myself on not getting to know other people, so do not put that on me.

Speaker 3:

Alec, do you think the bananas up until like the 60s weren't entirely different species of banana?

Speaker 2:

And Chad Hit me like a bacon bar.

Speaker 1:

Review some beer, talk about beer topics and whatever else comes up. We invite you to pour yourself a drink and hang out with us.

Speaker 2:

We're all in the hood just getting turned off. Finally back on our ship.

Speaker 1:

We click back on our bullshithy, we click the clacker while you're there. Click the clacker.

Speaker 3:

I don't know what is the video going. I don't know. That's on you, dude.

Speaker 2:

Did the producer start the video? Oh, brian's up, I did. It should be cranking.

Speaker 1:

Minute 45. There we go, okay, so now you get to click the clapper.

Speaker 3:

Click the clapper.

Speaker 1:

Click the clapper with the clack of the lock Boom.

Speaker 2:

That really was pretty unprofessional.

Speaker 1:

I'm kind of intrigued by the juice box.

Speaker 3:

Research on the fly. So we're going to get a whole heck of a lot of stuff done. This will be researched by committee. You want to cure it? Qr code yeah, See if that'll get you something. Yeah.

Speaker 1:

Let's see. Oh, it might just be their Insta. I'll make sure we're recording.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it's just their Instagram.

Speaker 3:

Well, we had more information off Instagram the last couple of years than we did off of their website.

Speaker 2:

This was like a last minute audible, don't mind me, this was the one. Do we have enough time before two people's wives start going? Where are you?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, so this is a pulpy. Literally just the name of the beer is pulpy, from Kettlehead Brewing and any IPA instead of an easy set of an easy, I heard that as an.

Speaker 1:

any IPA like any IPA, like a, and why IPA? Yep.

Speaker 2:

I'm a new Hampshire. Should we start calling him a NEPA? It's a NEPA beer. It'd be a little too close to a little too close to a NEPA baby. Yeah, let's not do that, okay.

Speaker 1:

Let's not do that at all.

Speaker 3:

Meet pulpy. He loves juicy IPAs. This one happens to be his favorite triple dry hop with combination of mosaic, citra and elderado hops. And no, there is no pulp in this beer. Drink fresh and enjoy cold. So is it a hazy or juicy IPA, if he loves juicy IPA and then named him after him?

Speaker 1:

Oh, dude, kettlehead, I think there's additional variations of there are many pulpes, yes, so when I type in pulpy into on tap, there are many pulpes, but this one is mine. It is the second pulpy, and then there are many, so there is pulpy. These are all from just Kettlehead.

Speaker 3:

Oh, that's juicy.

Speaker 1:

Wicked pulpy, uncle pulpy, cousin pulpy. Pulpy's family reunion. Little pulpy, oh yeah, that's juicy and that might be it of the pulpes that I see. Oh, mrs pulpy, yeah, so they got a few pulpes.

Speaker 3:

All right, and this is not a straight up IPA.

Speaker 1:

But you said that already.

Speaker 3:

We all you weren't in here yet we were talking about this is getting to. Like Chad said, we did a no hop, not no hop low.

Speaker 2:

I mean I love hop less hoppy, less hoppy January because we're generates and had to drink during dry January.

Speaker 3:

And then I said well, we did a whole hopped IPA Technically. Um, actually we have had some hops, but this is not a traditional IPA. This is, that is a juicy IPA. This is fat, this is is that not traditional now?

Speaker 2:

No idea, like no idea. I know it's a 7%, so that's, it's in the ballpark.

Speaker 1:

So this is more kind of yellow. Yes, that are expected.

Speaker 3:

Um, especially since there's an orange juice box on the camera.

Speaker 1:

So just talking about like the, just the variations of it and the different styles of where you look at, um, even within that hazy and New England IPA style, there can still be some large variations of things. Large but like, definitely in this kind of more yellowy, it's still very eh, kind of idiots.

Speaker 2:

If you told me this was a pale ale or a heff, I might believe you.

Speaker 3:

On visuals alone.

Speaker 1:

The heff I could get behind that.

Speaker 3:

It's a little light, maybe for a heff.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I'd be hard to say, but does that smell like a?

Speaker 3:

heff, that is a juicy.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, once you get it up to the nose, the illusion's over.

Speaker 1:

Like we made jokes about it. But my son smells my beers.

Speaker 2:

Is this juicy?

Speaker 1:

Even he is going to smell this one and be like do you have orange juice? What kind of juice do you have in there?

Speaker 2:

All sorts of citrus.

Speaker 1:

What a good bite with a swig Even in the aroma. You're getting like some like maybe some pineapple, some like fruit, fruit.

Speaker 2:

Guava. I believe guava was on the untapped review. Whoops, well, it's my house, do whatever.

Speaker 1:

There we go, yeah, the Road tip at home.

Speaker 2:

if you ever spill on your beer at the car, just kind of smooch it around your coaster, keep it off the bar top.

Speaker 3:

He spilled. That was his pour, not my pour.

Speaker 2:

It's like the guy went, did his cult plunge at Bass Pro Trinket.

Speaker 1:

There's a little shrinkage. I unfortunately saw that video.

Speaker 3:

No idea what you're talking about, so I got real excited because only we're at half of it. We were doing research on the fly for this one. This is an unexpected podcast for me today. Minimum order of three four packs for any online order to be eligible for free shipping. Say that one more time, wow. Minimum order of three, four packs for any online order to be eligible for free shipping.

Speaker 2:

So you buy 12 beers, the shipping is free is what you're telling me.

Speaker 3:

New Hampshire residents only. I saw that doing the fly research and I was like, oh, what we just talked about the cost of shipping.

Speaker 2:

Like 500 people live in New Hampshire.

Speaker 1:

Dude, I am not. I'm not getting on that we're not getting another.

Speaker 2:

Tulsa. There are probably more people living in Tulsa than New Hampshire. I don't care.

Speaker 1:

Absolutely not. Thank you for doing the research. I'm going to say no, this one up.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, you do that, I'm going to. No, there's entirely more people living in New Hampshire, but content.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, oh God, there's also a kettlehead popcorn. I really hope it's run by the same people 1.4 million. It's followed by the burgers. I hope it's out of Denver, never mind, okay, wait, do you say that one more time? It's only 1.4.

Speaker 3:

It's not a big state. No, I knew that, but that's like 400,000 in. It's actually not that far off If you have 420,000 people in Tulsa and you got just under one point. Do you remember that, or did you?

Speaker 1:

look at it, I just looked at it.

Speaker 3:

So you got 420,000 in Tulsa and 1.38 in New Hampshire.

Speaker 1:

How many Tulsa's?

Speaker 2:

do they have in New Hampshire? What's the Tulsa Metro population? No.

Speaker 1:

I'm meaning like breweries. How many Tulsa's are in New?

Speaker 3:

Hampshire? No idea, we've got 10 Tulsa's for 400.

Speaker 1:

I thought we went, that it had to be more. I have always said more.

Speaker 3:

I think we are at a 10 to 1 ratio right now on our current Tulsa.

Speaker 2:

We haven't revised. I think it's 10 to 1, but we're wrong of Tulsa's.

Speaker 3:

There's probably 25. In New Hampshire I would say at least.

Speaker 2:

It's at least 2.5 Tulsa's, I think, at least.

Speaker 3:

It's dense state. Fill the void. I'm going to look it up. Fill the void. Anyways, this is a tasty beer Pulpies. Fill them up. You guys are the ones that quit IPAs.

Speaker 1:

You just don't drink them outside of here and hockey games.

Speaker 3:

I drink water outside of here.

Speaker 2:

No, this is definitely filling a hop void that we've been missing Over this last month. Right, heavy air quotes. Beyond heavy, I'm going to the other, new Hampshire. We are severely wrong.

Speaker 3:

Higher, low, shocking. Yeah, that's not actually surprising.

Speaker 2:

Here. I am shocked.

Speaker 1:

New Hampshire currently ranks 8th in the country for craft breweries per capita. Nobody lives there With 90 breweries per capita. Like yeah, as of 2018, there was 86.

Speaker 3:

Okay, so they're still growing Dude that is impressive.

Speaker 1:

I thought you were a little low, but I wouldn't have guessed almost A third.

Speaker 2:

A car. Bad yeah, I'm sorry yeah.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, this is Brews in New Hampshire. From the visit new Hampshire dot gov. It did an H and it says with over 90 breweries among our seven regions and there is a whole page on all of the breweries. Seven regions, because in New Hampshire, like, probably like the two small to be called counties.

Speaker 3:

I don't dude.

Speaker 2:

Listen, somebody's got to pick a fight with another me and Tulsa are already in a feud.

Speaker 1:

I'm not doing it again.

Speaker 2:

It's been a cold war, us and Tulsa. We haven't talked about some of it.

Speaker 1:

No, forget whether I was listening to a podcast or somebody was talking about like it must have been a podcast, because I don't think I could have refrained myself if someone was in person talking about, like, tulsa breweries.

Speaker 3:

And I didn't say something.

Speaker 1:

I just don't know. But it actually goes back to probably the distribution stuff of like how there's been a small amount of prairie brewing in our area, but not like honestly that much. It's just the little bits that kind of come through for the craft distributors of stuff. This is really tasty.

Speaker 3:

It's pretty good, beyond the taste. You gonna feel it tomorrow.

Speaker 2:

Aye, I think it's early enough. The sun hasn't gone down yet.

Speaker 3:

Minutes away.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, don't mind, we got a little bit. We're on the upswing.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, we're swinging in the right direction. We're gaining hours, we're gaining hours. Somebody said like in less than 30 days, the sun will be going down to 7pm and I was like, oh, Whoa really, it's like 7 o'clock. It swings back quick Wow.

Speaker 1:

I'm here for that one. Ooh, also Loaded question brewing out of New Hampshire Okay, it's just a fun name. When I looked up Kettlehead number one, we talked about like okay, we're gonna drink this pulpy from Kettlehead and I was like sweet Montana brewery. Nope, nope, that is Kettle House. Didn't take much research to figure that out. Is this it is probably for you guys, it is likely for me the first New Hampshire beer? Yes, also, I just saw this. This is just fortuitous, I think, is the right word Happenstance.

Speaker 2:

Depends on where it's the service, all right.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, what shirt you wearing today. Oh, there you go.

Speaker 3:

MTJ. Oh, I had to look down because it's not my shirt.

Speaker 2:

But like I had to look at it because I did not put two into it together, I know, like New Hampshire winner right there Winner winner lobster dinner. Martin Truex senior.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, nascar baby. I honestly like I've drank a lot from different places, but like I don't know if I've ever had a New Hampshire beer.

Speaker 3:

No, I thought that's what you were gonna ask me and I'm like bro.

Speaker 1:

Well, that's why I started to do that and I was like there's no way, If I haven't, you haven't.

Speaker 3:

Well, let me check my. Don't even Untap it, just it hurts, it hurts.

Speaker 2:

I only know where beers come from because of this podcast, because I have to Do the research. What is the company about this beer from, instead of just being a normal beer connoisseur and just going? This looks good.

Speaker 1:

So you're not a nerd like me. That is like I still am angry about the app that I used to have. That doesn't tell me now whether it's Kraft or corporate.

Speaker 2:

No, I'm the nerd that has to plan on these episodes at a time.

Speaker 3:

This is independent Kraft on the On the.

Speaker 1:

Oh, yes, and I would have assumed, like I'm just saying.

Speaker 2:

I wouldn't allow anyone without the independent Kraft logo to come on this episode.

Speaker 3:

Bro, you guys both have macro beers sitting in front of you.

Speaker 1:

I was like wait, is this his?

Speaker 2:

That's a joke.

Speaker 1:

Bitburger.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, it's not macro here it's Juman. It's not macro here, Don't give much more internationally bro.

Speaker 2:

That's the joke.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, did you actually end up drinking Bitburger when you were?

Speaker 2:

over there, not even close, never saw it.

Speaker 3:

Is it like the fosters of Germany?

Speaker 2:

Based off my experience. Yes, we will see On round dry.

Speaker 1:

That's a. Are you going to switch back to doing German Duolingo so you can beat more fluent?

Speaker 2:

Oh, I still do it. I still do a lesson. I just I have to get the point so I can be at the top of my league, because it's a competition now that's the thing that I was getting okay. So I was doing the German, I thought I was doing good, but I was getting dusted Like people were beating me in first place, Like how do you get that many points? And it's like, oh, you sons of bitches are doing other languages. Oh, really, so on it. Yeah. Now it's oh, I'm going to min max with you nerds.

Speaker 1:

It's on now, but I I have not been able to quite explain to my wife that, like, if you want me to do something that, like I am not naturally inclined to do, I have to win. I think it's some kind of game. I have to win and I'm going to like yes, do that Like and it's.

Speaker 3:

My wife has other incentives, but I don't need points, I just need to score.

Speaker 2:

Oh, I'm good, Keep her on, all right. Anyways, back to the beer. If you'd? Like more of that content to grab to our Patreon or our only fans. That's going on the ground, nice.

Speaker 3:

Oh God Nice.

Speaker 2:

Oh, anyways, popey, Sorry, popey.

Speaker 3:

I'm going to take the top off on this. Yeah, that's what she said. That's what people want Genuine content.

Speaker 1:

This has gone off the rails more than I think we made it. What A year. A year and some change before it has completely gone off the rails.

Speaker 2:

They like us. Now they got to keep us.

Speaker 1:

Oh God, oh okay so it's pretty good.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it's very good.

Speaker 3:

I got so excited when, when I saw the ship for free.

Speaker 1:

Oh yeah, but by pace, we'll ship you for free.

Speaker 3:

You had me, I got stuckered me into it as well, because I didn't read the fact that it was New Hampshire residents only until we started recording. I did like the last minute research in between episodes and I'm like, oh, I'm saving this. Yeah, put a pin in it.

Speaker 1:

And then like and because, like, yeah, like to buy three, four packs like I'll put in, we can write, we can figure that out. Yeah, I mean, it makes a lot of sense. It's probably really cheap to ship within New Hampshire, like, just.

Speaker 3:

They send it on portion. Nobody lives there.

Speaker 1:

No, it's what. What honestly was? I can Google it. I was going to ask you guys, like you guys know what's the square. It's a tiny estate, square mileage of New.

Speaker 3:

Hampshire Less than the city of Seattle.

Speaker 1:

Why did we keep doing this? Why, why, why, figure it out?

Speaker 2:

Because we saw I have a backup here. So yeah, this letter. Right, do the library search, I don't care, you're looking up.

Speaker 1:

I'm looking up to Hampshire.

Speaker 3:

I'll look up King County Square.

Speaker 1:

We got the Seattle. Oh, now you're going to.

Speaker 3:

King.

Speaker 2:

County.

Speaker 3:

Seattle was unrealistic.

Speaker 1:

You made a claim, sir. It was unrealistic. I understand that Total area, yes, of 9,304 square miles.

Speaker 3:

Is New Hampshire 9,000.

Speaker 1:

But okay. So I want you to hear this in oh, it's because of the water. You can't count the water If it's in the state. Oh, Because that's what it is Total area. It says the total area of the state is 9,304 square miles, comprising 9,027 square miles of land and 277 square miles.

Speaker 3:

No, it still smokes. 2100 square miles for King County.

Speaker 1:

Bro, you thought, it was Seattle.

Speaker 2:

It's five times the size of but.

Speaker 1:

But people wise, it's only a little more than double.

Speaker 2:

Seattle, I think is around 600,000.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, six or seven.

Speaker 2:

I was gonna say 800, but Seattle Metro, yeah, you could fit all of New Hampshire comfortably in Seattle.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, it's just Seattle Metro 737.

Speaker 2:

Huh 737.

Speaker 3:

Is Seattle.

Speaker 2:

Seattle.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so a little over double yeah, which then, when you think about it, I mean you're talking about an entire state, so for sure they're in per capita, because we're looking at like 60 plus ish breweries in Seattle alone, yes, but for being an entire state per capita man, I'm shocked they're only eighth. Yeah, like that's actually kind of surprising to think about it.

Speaker 2:

Um, but if I lived in New Hampshire I would have to drink a lot.

Speaker 3:

What's wrong with New?

Speaker 1:

Hampshire. You don't know enough about New Hampshire to talk shit on.

Speaker 2:

New.

Speaker 1:

Hampshire, do you.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, new Hampshire probably got bears in your yard.

Speaker 3:

What's wrong with that? You might have a bear in your yard, have you?

Speaker 2:

been chased by a bear into a frozen lake before.

Speaker 1:

A bear is a murder machine Dude you haven't been chased by a bear into a lake.

Speaker 2:

Yes, I have. I'm trying to think I've been chased by a bear into a frozen lake before.

Speaker 1:

This is a silly thing, but I'm wondering if you're when we get big enough to get on Joe Rogan.

Speaker 2:

That's my story to Joe Rogan.

Speaker 1:

He didn't go, I'm good I'll skip that episode.

Speaker 2:

Oh, no way.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, 100%.

Speaker 2:

Oh, bro, you wouldn't listen to my episode with Joe Rogan. Nope, after we worked out and like, hopped in the cold plunge and did the sauna, nope, oh, there's my heart, bro, I'll be there with you.

Speaker 1:

It's cool.

Speaker 3:

Brian doesn't like Austin.

Speaker 1:

Are they the other shilling? Didn't we just talk about shilling? What On a few? One of the top. Oh, it was one of the top 20 or 30 of the breweries right, the breweries liked by bar 10 years or whatever.

Speaker 3:

Yes, and it was shilling, wasn't it Shilling cider? It was one of them. No, it wasn't shilling cider.

Speaker 1:

Because we have shilling cider here and shilling beer company is from New Hampshire. There you go, because I was trying to think if there's another New Hampshire brewery. That just came to mind and honestly there wasn't, so that is just where I ended up with. I was looking up in the most famous quote-unquote. So Popey's great, I Would you say, 7%.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it's a nice shot of hops after our. Yeah, but you guys.

Speaker 3:

Our journey through J-A-N-D Quit hops.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 3:

Not by choice. Yeah, I, you can choose the power through.

Speaker 1:

Life tells me otherwise, because that's literally what I've been trying to do is power through with drinking that stuff for the last, however many years.

Speaker 2:

We also live in an area where hops is just One.

Speaker 1:

that's part of it too.

Speaker 2:

That's a flavor you need in beer, like it was like. I saw it like halfway through. It was like, yeah, this is great, but I needed some extra hops. So I had, like that, double IPA mecha hops from Black Raven. Yeah, I've pulled an. I snagged a 19.2 IPA from the shelf single section because it was like I need a little bit of hops and you're making fun of me.

Speaker 1:

I'm a hypocrite. You're shaking your head. You're shaking your head no, aggressively as well.

Speaker 3:

I have water as my backup beer.

Speaker 2:

I sit there. I sat. I sat and bitched about the headache that hops gave me on a hockey night when it shouldn't have, but that's a flavor we are in our area, are accustomed to.

Speaker 1:

I went to a brewery and didn't have an IPA.

Speaker 3:

Ooh, how did that feel. How did that make you feel, Brian?

Speaker 2:

It hurt a little bit. Yeah, hurt a little bit. There's a couch over here if we can lie down and talk about it. But I had checked our locker, like we talked about, felt better. I had a barley wine.

Speaker 3:

Felt better, there you go Getting after it. What Five ounces.

Speaker 1:

Okay, that's it. It was. I talked about this last time. It's a four point something beer sandwich. I got a four point something beer. I had a five ounces of barley wine. I had a four point something ounce beer. Percent beer.

Speaker 2:

So new, so new. Brian theory has dropped out is the beer sandwich.

Speaker 1:

Oh, that's been a good like I will always. Always is a bit aggressive. I will frequently Grab a little bit of your really boozy one and try to like fit that into another, but it's new to the audience. Oh, yes, but also it's new to the fact of like, instead of sandwiching it, sandwiching it between IPAs, literally dropping like almost two percentage points per beer with, like, no hops at all. Zero I BUs, zero I BUs, I'm gonna put Pulpy.

Speaker 3:

Yes, it's gonna be hard to get out of here. If it was free shipping, it would probably be on its way next week.

Speaker 1:

If you had continued that sentence and there was no, I was gonna give you the cash out of my pocket, especially a mix pack.

Speaker 3:

Oh, in case everybody gets a couple cans, we can try all the different gramma pulpes anti-pulpes.

Speaker 1:

All it took was a minimum of 12. Like we can easily yeah, We'd have just made our own thing.

Speaker 1:

We'd put borders in before we go home today. Yeah, we'd probably would have Is accessible. I think the problem we're running into is now I'm putting it into a category of what everything we drink instead of just this one independently. Yeah, if I just think of this independently and not trying to rank it against others, I would try to find a place for it, at least occasionally. That it doesn't drink heavy, it drinks light, even for being hazy. It doesn't feel there's no bitterness, it doesn't feel Even you talked about one of them a while back of having that lingering flavor. It doesn't have that. So I want it in my rotation. If I'm just thinking singularly and locally accessible, I probably almost always have one of them, like a four pack to just cycle through. Yeah, as like, if I'm just thinking independently and not categorizing it against everything else, I'm going to do that as like a beer friger for sure.

Speaker 3:

That's kind of where I'm at. Hazies aren't my everyday go-to play. They're a good mix up every once in a while. Maybe we got to off air we got to figure out our rating system.

Speaker 1:

I think we're going to need to re-thin.

Speaker 3:

we're either going to get real big beer fridges at this point, or we come up with some sort of a rating system where we can go, Because we've run into that a lot where you go. This would be great, but I can't get it. This would be fantastic if I was in the area. If I saw this in the wild I'd absolutely grab it, but kind of reviewing this beer on its own.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I didn't think I felt like we had a good system.

Speaker 2:

But now We've had enough beer and we've been doing this long enough. Now there needs to be a little bit of nuance. That one to five star on-to-vore is great One oh, okay. Yeah, because you can rate the beers one to five on-to-vore. But we've been on a it's a beer fridge or it's a fridge or it's an outdoor fridge or it's a holiday beer.

Speaker 1:

The Kilsner on Untapped is never getting a consensus. 4.5 stars, but a barrel age could.

Speaker 3:

I would give this 3.75 bullies.

Speaker 1:

See, and maybe we tried to avoid doing that sort of thing.

Speaker 3:

We didn't have a frame of reference.

Speaker 2:

But maybe we start doing a now out of five. We were doing the rating on-to-vore like.

Speaker 3:

Chad knows, and we all just randomly pick a different metric. Brian can beer fridge it. I'll do a one out of five. Chad can give it one out of ten stars.

Speaker 2:

Whatever we're feeling like that day.

Speaker 3:

I'm gonna give this who knows?

Speaker 2:

I mean it's all Dare. I say it becomes a who's line is in any way the points don't matter.

Speaker 1:

Isn't that what we've been doing the whole time?

Speaker 2:

Pretty much Basically Cool, I really enjoyed it, though Personally that's a total beer fridge for me. Okay, yep, even if it was locality. It's a flavor I want in my fridge, but I don't need it every day. No.

Speaker 3:

Cool. Well, our glasses are empty. Yes, hopefully yours are too. We'll catch you next time.

Speaker 1:

You.

Speaker 2:

You.
